Our January Classroom Calendar: Austria

Explorica is proud to continue with the second year of this helpful resource for teachers: our 2019-20 Around the World classroom calendar!

The calendar features a new country (or state!) and an international holiday or event for you to celebrate with your students each month. Download a new page every month on this blog (and subscribe!), hang it up in your classroom, and talk to your students about how the holiday reflects the country’s history and culture.

To kick off the new decade, this January, we are featuring Austria! This country has so much history that has defined our world. One of the world’s bestknown classical composers, Wolfgang Amedaeus Mozart, was born in Stralzburg, Austria on January 27th, 1756. It is also considered the birthplace of Protestantism and is home to many wonderful castles and mountains!

When students participate in our Switzerland, Bavaria, & Austria tours, they will see the Golden Roof, a royal balcony built in 1496. Other spectacular sites include Neuschwanstein Castle, Nymphenburg Palace Gardens, the Deutsches Museum, BMW Headquarters, and St. Stephen’s Cathedral, just to name a few!

Use this resource to teach your students about the history and importance of Austria and its neighboring countries, and all the exciting and educational things to see and do across the different cities!

Questions to ask your students:

  • What are some interesting things you have learned about Austria’s history?
  • Discuss the significance of the country’s history and the role it has played in our modern society.
  • Discuss the history of classical music. How has it shaped the music that is popular today?
