The nation swears in the 45th President of the United States on Jan. 20, 2017. In conjunction with WorldStrides, Explorica sent more than 5,000 students and their teachers to participate in this historic event.
Obviously, not all of us can be in D.C., but that doesn’t mean you can’t soak up the energy and celebrate this special day that’s all about American tradition and celebration. Here’s how the day will play out:
The heart of the party
The official proceedings of Inauguration Day commence around noon on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol with the vice president-elect and president-elect taking the Oaths of Office, followed by the inaugural address.
Giant video screens and audio systems will stream the proceedings to the thousands of spectators on the National Mall.
Citizens will flood the sides of Pennsylvania Avenue to cheer on the presidential procession and inaugural parade as it makes its way from the U.S. Capitol to the White House. The parade will begin at approximately 3 p.m. on Inauguration Day.
The Presidential Inauguration Committee now also features a full rundown of inauguration activities, including details of the swearing-in ceremony and the parade.
Dance the night away: Inaugural Balls
Revelers may want to don a tuxedo or evening dress and dance the night away, and they’ll have plenty of options. Inauguration Day brings glitz and glamor to DC with the big names in politics, business and entertainment descending on the city. Many of the top caterers are booked a year in advance and some luxury stores have pop-ups in high-end hotels for any last minute wardrobe changes.
There are official and unofficial balls, the difference being that the newly named president and vice president attend many of the official balls.
Whether you are in D.C. or watching from home, the peaceful transfer of power on inauguration day is a part of American democracy in which we can all participate.
