Educational Travel Photo of the Week: Venice

A series of 118 islands connected by nearly 150 canals and over 400 bridges, the city of the Venetian Lagoon stands as an achievement of strength and resiliency in a never-ending battle against the elements.  Exposed to constant movement of water and a sinking foundation, this floating city is a marvel of architectural endurance and a surreal union of land and sea.  Once used as a retreat from intruders, the waterways of Venice have become the heart of this unique city and remain one of the most sought after tourist destinations in Italy.  Although no longer the Venetian’s primary mode of transportation, the enigmatic gondola has come to symbolize the city’s romance as well as its realism, its bounty as well as its fate.  As the city slowly drowns in its own foundation, as exemplified in its seasonal high tide known as acqua alta, its appeal and mystery grows amongst artists and tourists alike.
