Explorica is very proud of our new resource for teachers: our 2018-19 Around the World classroom calendar!
The calendar features a new country and an international holiday or event for you to celebrate with your students each month. Download a new page each month on this blog (and subscribe!), hang it up in your classroom, and talk to your students about how the holiday reflects the country’s history and culture.
This May, we’re featuring World Turtle Day. Established in 2000, World Turtle Day, May 23rd, encourages citizens to support the conservation of all species of turtles and tortoises. The Galápagos Tortoise, from which the islands get their name, is the largest living species of tortoise.
Use this opportunity to teach your students about the many endemic species of the Galápagos Islands, and why the conservation of vulnerable species there, and all around the world, is so important.
Questions to ask your students:
What other animals can be found in the Galápagos?
Do you know what endemism means?
What do you think biological researchers do in places like the Galápagos?
