Explorica is proud to continue with the second year of this helpful resource for teachers: our 2019-20 Around the World classroom calendar!
The calendar features a new country (or state) and an international holiday or event for you to celebrate with your students each month. Download a new page every month on this blog (and subscribe!), hang it up in your classroom, and talk to your students about how they reflect on the country’s history and culture.
This April, we’re traveling across the pond to England, the country home to one of the world’s best-known literary figures.
William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, England on April 26, 1564. He was responsible for 39 plays and 154 sonnets, among a variety of other written works. London’s Globe Theatre, first built in 1599 and then rebuilt in 1614 after it burned down from a fire, is where many of Shakespeare’s plays were debuted — and performances still take place daily!
From the lands that brought you tea and crumpets, Arthurian legends, and all things Gaelic, take a journey through Britain and Ireland’s rich histories on our Ireland, Scotland & England tour. Students participating in this tour will explore the countries’ biggest castles, most prominent ruins, and extensive museums while taking in stunning views as they trek through the lush green countryside.
Use this calendar as a resource to teach your students about the history of not only England, but Ireland and Scotland as well.
Questions to ask your students:
- What are some of Shakespeare’s most famous written works and how did his writing shape literature today?
- Discuss the relationship between England, Ireland, and Scotland.
- Explain the history and significance of the Globe Theatre.
