Our June Classroom Calendar: Alaska

Explorica is proud to continue with the second year of this helpful resource for teachers: our 2020 Around the World classroom calendar! We’ll feature a new country (or state) each month for you to download, hang up in your classroom, and discuss with your students.

Let’s explore the Last Frontier this month! The 49th state admitted to the United States, Alaska is located on the most northern part of the West Coast (Canada separates it from Washington State). Explore the cities and parks and get inspired while visiting this state!

Alaska is a popular travel destination for its wildlife and magnificent landscapes. Do you know how many National Parks there are in Alaska? There are eight: Denali, Gates of the Arctic, Glacier Bay, Katmai, Kenai Fjords, Kobuk Valley, Lake Clark, and Wrangell-St. Elias. Beyond nature, Alaska’s cities offer an array of activities, filled with museums, shops, and restaurants serving fresh-caught Alaskan salmon and more.

When participating in our Alaska tour, students will have a chance to discover everything this incredible state has to offer. They’ll experience the urban side of Alaska while exploring the city of Fairbanks with a walking tour. Students will immerse themselves in the culture and nature of the area, then travel down the Chena River to visit a Chena Indian Village and see wildlife in Denali National Park. End the trip with a stop in Anchorage for an Alaskan glacier cruise and museum visit.

Use this resource to share Alaska with your students, focusing on wildlife and nature found in this northwestern state.

Questions to ask your students:

  • Discuss the history of Alaska joining the United States.
  • What unique animals can you find in Alaska’s wildlife?
  • Discuss the size of Alaska and the regions it is broken up into. What are the most popular destinations in each region?
