From the first phone call to returning home, we are there for you and your students every step of the way. Here are a few of the frequently asked questions about tipping on tour:
What should I expect for tipping?
Along with your tour director, there are many other people that assist in making your trip an amazing experience. As part of the service industry, we ask that you tip them. On international tours, we suggest a minimum of $5-$7 per day per traveler, including travel days, for your tour director. For bus drivers, we recommend $2-$3 per day per person, including travel days. In the event of having multiple bus drivers, we recommend that you pay each on their last day with the tour group. On U.S. and Canada tours, it is customary to tip your full-time tour director a minimum of $3-5 per person, per day. For bus drivers, each participant is expected to tip their bus driver $1-$2 per person, per day.
Are we only responsible for tipping the tour director and bus driver(s)?
On many tours, you will have local guides and airport transfer bus drivers. In these cases, it is at your discretion to provide tips, but it is suggested that each traveler budgets $1-$2. You can check your number of local guides through your itinerary; wherever a “guided” visit is listed, you will have one. On tours with activities (canopy tours, hutong tours, etc.), you will have guides as well. Note that on Greek cruises, tips for the cruise staff are included in your Tour Fee. Travelers are encouraged to budget $10-$15 total for all of these instances. Note also that it is recommended all tips be paid in the local currency of your final stop, and if someone on your tour has gone above and beyond your expectations, you are more than welcome to add additional tips.
Should I expect additional tipping outside of the standard in any destinations?
Yes. In places like Cuba, China, Peru and the Galapagos, you will interact with more locals than you would on a standard tour. Ask your program consultant if more tips are recommended.
If I have included On-Tour Tipping, what does this cover?
On-Tour Tipping includes the tips for both the tour director and bus driver(s). Group leaders, and often Free Places as well, are not charged for this so be sure to check with your program consultant about who will still need to pay tips on tour. If an outstanding job has been done, additional tips are welcome.
