Group Leader Spotlight: Vivian

Vivian, librarian

Vivian’s enthusiasm for travel is contagious. “I love to travel,” she says. “My husband and I do home exchanges, so when I started working at a high school I wanted to help my students see the world, too.” At the recommendation of a coworker, she reached out to Explorica.

Vivian was thrilled by the support and the ability to change her student-chaperone ratio, so parents could join her trips. “I want families to be able to share in the travel experience,” she explains.

Sometimes that experience includes unexpected changes. “The day before my trip to Greece, my program consultant called to let me know that our airline was striking,” she begins. “We didn’t know how it would affect us, but she was already making contingency plans in case we got stuck on our layover in Rome.” As an experienced traveler, Vivian took the situation in stride, but not everyone shared her level of comfort. “One mother was so concerned about her daughter, who was traveling abroad for the first time, that she wanted to back out completely,” Vivian recalls. Thankfully, the mother decided to let her daughter come, and it paid off. “We got a bonus tour,” says Vivian. “As predicted, we got held up in Rome, so Explorica gave us a tour of the city. We got to see the Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, it was great.”

And what became of the mom who wanted to cancel? “She said she had been cured of her fear because everything worked out so well,” Vivian beams. “The next year, she came on my trip and brought both of her daughters. That’s what Explorica does for people, and that’s why I travel with them: no matter what happens, you can have faith in Explorica to give you a great tour.”
