This June our fellow Explorican, Bonnie B., joined us on our Peru: Machu Picchu adventure! She was fortunate enough to capture the moment below of her daughter, Savannah, in the landmark’s lower plaza. The pic was voted as the Best Local Interaction photo from our 2015 Photo Contest by Explorica staff.
Savannah, she says, is “crazy about llamas” and “was in heaven!” While wandering through Machu Picchu, they were able to get close to the animals and one in particular came up for kisses. [Insert collective “aww!” here]
We reached out to Bonnie for details about her past journeys with her family and their travel plans down the road. One thing’s for sure, no matter where she goes, we hope she’ll be there with a camera!
EXPLORICA (EX): Where else have you traveled?
BONNIE B. (BB): Tanzania & Rwanda , Africa, China, England, Switzerland, Mexico, plus all 50 US states
EX: What’s your favorite part about traveling?
BB: Gaining an appreciation for new cultures, foods, languages, and enjoying the amazing scenery.
EX: What’s your best memory from this tour?
BB: Seeing Machu Picchu at sunrise, just as the sun came over the Andes Mountains. As if the spectacle of the ancient city weren’t amazing enough, seeing it at first light in the quiet of dawn was such a reverent experience. The site is just magical.
EX: Where to next?
BB: We’d love to make it to all the continents. The trip to Peru helped us mark off South America, so our next big goal is Down Under to Australia and New Zealand.
EX: Tell us your best travel tip.
BB: Flexibility! Be willing to step out of your comfort zone to experience something new and different –that’s what travel is for! Try a new food, like cuy (guinea pig is popular in Peru!), try speaking to the local people in their language, relax and soak up the sights, smells, and scenery!
